(The Chirp) --  Jason Motte, who saved nine games from Aug. 28 to the end of last season, struck out the last two hitters he faced in the ninth inning. He earned the save with a scoreless inning. Motte was throwing as hard as 99 mph, but he worked on his off-speed pitches this spring, too.

LHP Marc Rzepczynski got one of the biggest outs of the game when he fanned PH Austin Kearns with a runner in scoring position to end the eighth inning with the Cardinals leading 4-1. Rzepczynski is valued because he can get right-handed batters out besides the left-hander (PH Greg Dobbs) he was originally brought in to face.
