Statesboro, GA (Sports Network) - Eric Ferguson scored 11 points and brought
down 11 rebounds as Georgia Southern held on for a 64-57 win over Furman in a
Southern Conference battle at W.S. Hanner Fieldhouse.
Jelani Hewitt led Georgia Southern (11-12, 9-4 SoCon) with 16 points. Ben
Drayton scored 13 and Willie Powers chipped in 11 and handed out eight
assists for the Eagles who have now won three straight. Ferguson's
performance was his fourth double-double of the season.
Bobby Austin scored 13 and Brandon Sebirumbi added 10 points and eight
rebounds for Furman (13-11, 6-7) which had won five of its previous seven.
The scored was deadlocked 34-34 at halftime with Furman netting 48.0 percent
of its shots from the floor while Georgia Southern shot 44.8 percent to start
the game. The Eagles kept the game tied by creating four more field goal
attempts and forcing 11 Furman turnovers.
Georgia Southern was the dominant offensive team shooting 57.1 percent from
the floor and although Furman notched only 26.7 percent of its shots was able
to keep the game close by outscoring the Eagles 15-6 from beyond the arc.
The Eagles didn't do themselves any favors by going just 4-of-12 from the free
throw line.
Georgia Southern turned 17 Furman turnovers into 25 points and outscored the
Paladins 28-10 on points in the paint.
