KSDK -- The O'Fallon Police Department is looking for the owner of a tortoise that was found in the northern part of the city on Tuesday.

A woman in the Royal Oaks subdivision found the tortoise in her backyard and called authorities, according to Tom Drabelle, an O'Fallon Police Department spokesman. An animal control officer was dispatched to the scene to retrieve the 23 or 30 pound tortoise.

The tortoise has since been turned over to the care of a veterinarian, Drabelle said.

The owner can claim the tortoise by calling the O'Fallon Police Department at 636-240-3200.
