Overnight fire injures St. Louis firefighter

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Fire inside a vacant building in the 1000 block of South Kingshighway Boulevard early Wednesday forced the closure of both north and southbound traffic for nearly two hours this morning and slightly injured one firefighter.

The blaze broke out just after 4:00 a.m. today and quickly consumed the two story brick structure on the south side of Interstate 64 where Oakland dead ends with Kingshighway.

Fire investigators say the fire started in the rear portion of the four family flat which had been unoccupied for some time.

One of the firefighters invovled suffered a minor injury and was treated by paramedics on the scene.  that unidentified fireman was not hospitalized and was expected to continue his tour of duty on Wednesday.

The fire damage to the entire structure was significant and forced all lanes of the road to be closed while the fire was put out.  St. Louis Police assisted in traffic control at the fire scene.

No word on what might have ignited the fire and the investigation is ongoing.
